LASALLE College of the Arts

LASALLE College of the Arts was established in Singapore in 1984 by Brother Joseph McNally, a visionary artist and educator. A founding member of the University of the Arts Singapore, it is the highest ranked specialist arts institution in Southeast Asia for Performing Arts and joint top for Art & Design (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025).

The College offers 36 academic programs across the full spectrum of arts and design disciplines. A nurturing, interdisciplinary learning environment inspires the next generation of forward-looking and globally engaged creative leaders.

The MA Arts and Cultural Leadership programme at LASALLE equips practitioners with leadership capabilities for the fast-evolving cultural and creative sectors. It welcomes students seeking to harness their creativity towards a larger purpose and nurtures creative practitioners and arts / cultural professionals to take up leadership roles in community initiatives, public institutions, the private and commercial sectors, and non-profit organizations.

Goals and Objectives

Drawing on the strength of Singapore as a global hub, students go through a close study of theories in arts management, cultural policy, and the creative economy, and expand their perspectives through seminars with industry professionals, academics and researchers. As a program based in Southeast Asia, we have a particular emphasis on engaging with the arts, heritage and creative communities in Asia. Students participate in activities of ANCER – the Asia Pacific Network for Cultural Research and Education, which seeks to stimulate inquiry and dialogue in arts management and cultural policy developments in the region.

Recognizing the interdisciplinary nature of the field, the Program draws on approaches and frameworks from the arts and humanities, public policy, cultural studies, business and management. As it is based in an arts college with a focus on practice-based learning, the Program balances the understanding of creative, artistic and intellectual processes and the application of classroom learning to students’ practice contexts. The Program emphasizes a dynamic peer-learning environment to enable individual self-reflection and critique, the establishment of individual and collective cause and purpose, and the opportunity for students to discover their own approach to leadership.

The Program welcomes students from Asia and beyond. Graduates work in diverse roles in the private, governmental and non-profit sectors, have started their own enterprises and community initiatives, or gone on to further their research in the arts.

Curriculum

The Program is offered in full-time and part-time mode. Full-time study spans three consecutive semesters in one year. The part-time mode, offered only to Singaporeans, spans two years. Students take four 30-credit modules over two semesters (four in part-time mode) in the in arts management principles, strategy and leadership, cultural policy and the creative economy; there is also an interdisciplinary module where students work alongside students from other MA Programs. In the final semester, students undertake a 60-credit Final Research module where they develop their research interests into a dissertation or capstone research project.
