Prof. David Edelman

David Edelman is Professor of Arts Management and Director of the Performing Arts Leadership and Management Program at Shenandoah Conservatory. He is the founder and co-editor of The American Journal of Arts Management. Prior to joining the Conservatory faculty, he was Executive Director of Big Apple Performing Arts in New York City. Prof. Edelman has served as the Executive Director of Contemporary American Theatre Company in Columbus, Ohio, Managing Director of Delaware Theatre Company, Managing Director of George Street Playhouse in New Jersey, and Associate Producer at Olympia Dukakis’ Whole Theatre in New Jersey. He served two terms as President of the NJ Theatre Alliance and sat on the Board of ArtPride, NJ’s arts advocacy organization. He was a founding member of the Arts Consortium of Delaware and the Riverfront Wilmington Business Improvement District. He also served on the boards of Sister Cities of Wilmington, the Wilmington Arts Leaders Roundtable, Brandywine Valley Cultural Tourism Planning Committee, AIDS Delaware, the Wilmington Metropolitan Area Planning Commission, and the Ohio Department of Education’s Arts Standards Advisory Committee. Prof. Edelman received his undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis and earned his MFA from Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. He is a former board member of the Association of Arts Administration Educators and currently serves on the board of directors of Social Theory, Politics and the Arts. He has recently presented papers and served on panels at the Association of Arts Administration Educators annual conference, the Social Theory, Politics and the Arts annual conference, the ENCATC Annual Conference. He is the author of the chapter Acting Up & Fighting Back: How New York’s Artistic Community Responded to AIDS, included in Grassroots Leadership & The Arts For Social Change.
