Shared Histories, Uncharted Realities:
Cultural Management in a Complex World

LASALLE | University of the Arts Singapore, Singapore

We are thrilled to welcome delegates to the 2027 AAAE Conference, hosted for the very first time in Asia right here in Singapore. As a dynamic global crossroads, Singapore amalgamates diverse Asian traditions, cuisines, and cultures into a single vibrant hotspot where creative fusion and multicultural contexts flourish. Beyond its rich heritage, Singapore is a premier business center for contemporary innovation and a global hub for new technologies, driving groundbreaking experimentation with emerging digital tools and entrepreneurial solutions. This unique ecosystem provides a robust platform for cultural sharing, knowledge exchange, mutual enrichment, and sustainable sector growth. At the center of this artistic hub is LASALLE College of the Arts, University of the Arts Singapore, which plays a leading role in contemporary arts education and practice across Southeast Asia. Championing bold experimentation, critical inquiry, and cross-cultural dialogue, LASALLE proudly hosts this milestone gathering, inviting art management educators, cultural managers, scholars, artists, researchers and creative leaders to convene, collaborate, and usher the arts into the future.

Conference submissions can address either or all of the conceptual pointers below:

Shared Histories

We invite contributions that examine the pre-existing traditions, cultural roots and heritage practices of arts management that continue to inform contemporary and future practice. Across multicultural territories, indigenous communities, and long-standing artisan lineages, governance and creative stewardship have evolved through unique historical contexts. How have diverse societies sustained, transmitted, and organized their cultural expressions over generations? We welcome papers, case studies, and practical reflections that honor these foundational systems while illuminating how ancestral knowledge and historical wisdom can offer vital, grounding perspectives for modern cultural management.

Uncharted Realities

This strand explores the emerging contexts and paradigm shifts actively reshaping arts management practice today. We invite projects and reflections addressing rapid technological disruptions and digital affordances, innovative business and entrepreneurial models, agile strategies for project design and execution, and newly expanding territories for hybrid genres and born-digital artwork. In an age of fluid boundaries and rapid change, how are practitioners and educators navigating uncertainty, seizing new affordances, and turning uncharted territories into sustainable opportunities for artistic communities?

Navigating a Complex World

Arts management today operates amid multi-layered global challenges, to mention few: limitations on artistic and academic freedom and curriculum autonomy, shifting government funding priorities, unresolved complexities surrounding migration, diaspora, and social inclusion, tense geopolitical landscapes, disruptions to international collaboration driven by political agendas, and a broader systemic crisis in the humanities. Yet, this strand approaches these friction points with optimism, energy, and agency. We invite contributions that showcase resilience, ingenious problem-solving, and empowering responses, demonstrating how the arts sector can overcome contemporary obstacles, build solidarity, and forge promising and inclusive futures.

Through the dual lenses of shared histories and uncharted realities, the 2027 AAAE Conference celebrates the agility, creativity, and transformative power of cultural management. We look forward to welcoming you to Singapore for a cultural exchange and lasting network-building across the world.

All accepted submissions will be offered the opportunity to apply for one or more incentives available to conference presenters, including an AAAE-AJAM Focal Issue and conference prizes for emerging and established professionals.
