MA in Arts Administration

Located in the heart of New York City, the Baruch MA program trains the next generation of leaders in the arts and culture field. As both partner and supporter of the city’s world-renowned museums, theaters, galleries, and cultural institutions, our program allows students to explore and engage with the wide range of public, private, and non-profit arts institutions in our field, providing students the opportunity to fully develop as arts leaders. This program is open to both full-time and part-time students, with courses offered at our centrally located Manhattan campus on weekday evenings. Our faculty are leading educators and practitioners from diverse fields, including fine and performing arts, communication studies, public policy, accounting, management, and organization theory. A truly interdisciplinary program, students take courses across Baruch’s three award-winning schools: the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, the Zicklin School of Business, and the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs. Students benefit from an integrated curriculum that incorporates arts, culture, management, and public policy. Our students graduate with new skills and deeper confidence as they assume roles of arts executives, managers, educators and advocates.

Curriculum

The 36 credit (approx. 2 years) MA program consists of a core curriculum of eight courses and four electives. The eight courses that make up our core curriculum develop our students’ competencies across areas essential to future leaders in the arts administration field.

Wide-ranging elective options, including many in the renowned Zicklin School of Business and Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, allow students to deepen their knowledge within specific areas of interest as well as explore disciplines new to them. Students are expected to study across artistic disciplines to increase their awareness of the field as a whole and better prepare them for success in our fast-paced and ever-changing field.

With a practical approach and the benefits of our location in one of the cultural capitals of the world, the program encourages students to engage in professional internships and, in their final semester, students develop a consultancy with an arts organization, leading to a thesis or case study for use by the organization, as well as future students and practitioners in the field.
