How has being a member impacted your career, teaching, or research in arts administration?
I’ve met colleagues through AAAE that have given me advice and opportunities that have helped my program to evolve and improve our program’s curriculum and my teaching practice. I’ve met research collaborators that have taught me about academic writing, how to navigate academic publishing, and generously shared opportunities.
The spirit of the AAAE members is incredible. Everyone seeks to champion and lift each other up so that collectively we are growing and strengthening the field of arts management through education of future managers and scholars.
Have you collaborated with other members or found mentorship through AAAE? Tell us about a collaboration or connection you’ve made.
During COVID, I started an informal weekly email of fellow women in arts management of a few other AAAE members that I had met at conferences and it was a great source of support and accountability during a tough time. We are all still in touch and have made several collaborations amongst ourselves!
Why should academic institutions support AAAE membership for their faculty?
Arts management programs at universities are often very small, with only one or two faculty members. Since arts management programs are interdisciplinary, blending arts, business, and the social sciences, it can be difficult for colleagues on campus to understand our work. Faculty need to have colleagues where they can share their work, find research collaborators, discuss curriculum design, and generally have support in order to be successful and satisfied. AAAE offers this source of tangible connection for arts management faculty.
